Arguably the most important character in the Halo series, the lead role, Master Chief, has appeared in many plays, books, even comics over the past 20 years. But there’s one thing he hasn’t done in all these years, and that’s taking off his helmet. Indeed, we’ve never seen the face of Master Chief. But that’s going to change with Paramount+.
Kiki Wolfkill, executive producer of halo TV series and 343;000 transmedia director, announced that we will see the face of Master Chief in the series. The reason master chief was going to take off his helmet on the show was because it was a personal story.
“We set out to tell a character story and a personal story. And when we really got into that story, it turned out that you really needed to see the person in that armor and under that helmet,” Wolfkill said.
Not being able to see master chief’s face in games never hurt the story. Similarly, not hearing Gordon Freeman’s voice didn’t hurt Half-Life. It’s hard to understand why halo producers need it. Already both 343 and Microsoft are aware that such scenes will create controversy. A significant number of fans of the series prefer to keep the character mysterious without his face visible.
“For some, this is the end of a 20-year wait, and for others it’s a very difficult thing to imagine. We respect those who want to see the face of the Chief and those who don’t. But because of the nature of the story, we thought it was important to connect differently with Master Chief, which means showing his face.”
Here’s a consolation. As 343 and Microsoft have previously confirmed, the series will take place in a different timeline, except for the canon of the game, and will not be the same master chief we know from the Master Chief games we will see in the series. So if you want to think, “This isn’t the real Master Chief we’ve seen,” you’re free to 🙂
Master Chief is played by Pablo Schreiber.
