A survey of over 3,000 professionals from the gaming industry shows that the vast majority of game developers think it’s unfair that Steam gets a 30% share of revenue.
Only 3% of respondents thought it was fair to cut 30% of their income. In the same survey last year, the answer to that question dropped by 6%, or 50%.
Forty-three percent of respondents said a 10% to 15% cut would be much fairer. This issue of 30/70 income distribution has been discussed before. Google will soon reduce its share of the first $1 million from 30% to 15%. Apple similarly cut its share to 15% for developers selling for less than $1 million a year.
As you know, the Epic Games Store is making its best efforts to lower the industry standard by taking a 12% share. But most of the Epic Games Store’s moves are already aggressive, and they don’t care about losing money in the short term. That’s how they got 52 million new users in 2020. Valve, on the other hand, remains silent on these issues.
