Sony is said to be producing a new PlayStation 5 in 2022. Suppliers, including TSMC, plan to start production of the redesigned PlayStation 5 console between the second and third quarters of next year, DigiTimes reported. According to Kantan Games Analyst Dr. Serkan Toto via his Twitter account in the link; DigiTimes supply chain sources complain that the redesigned PlayStation 5 console is too expensive for the 5nm CPU currently in use. That’s why it’s said that the next console will come with the new “semi-customized” 6nm CPU from AMD. Apart from that, it seems likely that the redesign is completely component-oriented and does not involve any significant external changes.
New PlayStation 5 model may be released at the end of next year
Sony recently said that the supply of PlayStation 5 consoles is unlikely to improve significantly after the current fiscal year ended March 31, 2022. In addition, following the release of record-breaking PlayStation financial results, Sony’s CFO Hiroki Totoki said the company was considering a variety of solutions to help it deal with a potentially lack of global hardware components, such as changing hardware designs and developing secondary suppliers:
“As I said before (referring to year 2), we aim for more sales volume than the previous console. But can we greatly increase supply? No, that’s unlikely. There are also many factors that will affect the volume of production. Therefore, we are currently aiming to return second-year sales of 14.8 million, the second year of the previous console.”
We know that one of the biggest deficiencies affecting production volume is the lack of semiconductors. Commenting specifically on this problem, which affects all consumer electronics industries, from smartphones to cars, Totoki suggested that Sony has the tools to deal with this problem, adding: “We can find a secondary source or we can cope by changing the design.”
PlayStation 5 current sales figures
Following “unprecedented” consumer demand for the PlayStation 5, Sony claimed the platform recorded “the biggest console launch of all time.” According to Sony, the PlayStation 5 console sold 4.5 million units in the launch quarter and 3.3 million more in the quarter ended March 31, 2021. These statistics; In the first two quarters since its launch in November 2020, total shipments reached 7.8 million, surpassing the 7.6 million sales the previous console generated over the same time period.
