The most exciting game news of recent times came from Ron Gilbert last week, and we learned that return to monkey island, the new game in the legendary Monkey Island series, is in development. Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman are leading the project.
Dave Grossman co-wrote and programmed The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge with Ron Gilbert and Tim Schafer. He’s also a co-designer of Day of the Tentacle.
Ron Gilbert is the creator of the technology we know as S.C.U.M.M. and used in many LucasArts adventure games. He is also the creator, director and designer of The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck;s Revenge.
In an interview with the website Adventuregamers, the two also talked about the visual style of the game and said they did not want to use pixel drawings in a modern game. It’s a very accurate finding, actually, because the charts had already evolved after the first two Monkey Island. Moreover, special edition versions of the first two games were carried to the present day with more modern graphics.
We got the first clue about the visual style of the game when we watched the trailer, but now we can also see various visuals from the game:
Personally, I love this new style as an old-school adventure patient, and I wonder what Guybrush will look like. The play’s artistic director is Rex Crowle, who has also worked on LittleBigPlanet and Double Fine’s Knights and Bikes.
