In September 2020, Nvidia pressed the button to buy Arm; one of the most important names in the semiconductor industry, and with the agreement approved by the boards of both companies, Nvidia officially announced that it would buy Arm for $40 billion. This purchase process would take approximately 18 months and Arm would join Nvidia.
Nvidia’s acquisition of Arm was a crucial undertaking for the semiconductor industry, but it was not expected. The takeover of nvidia, which makes chips for most of the mobile devices on the market, has failed to pass regulators on the grounds that it would violate competition rules and have a monopoly.
When Nvidia made the announcement, major tech firms such as Qualcomm and Microsoft also raised their voices because they needed Arm’s chip designs for their various projects.
Softbank told Bloomberg that both sides have agreed to terminate the agreement. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission also attempted to freeze the deal in December, saying it would give Nvidia too much control over the chips used by the world’s largest technology firms.
