The idea of an unnamed open-world Iron Man game was scrapped in 2012 by the joint decision of Marvel and Disney. Avalanche Studios, the developer of the Just Cause series, stated that they worked on the project for many years before the plug was pulled. Christofer Sundberg, one of the founders of the studio, stated that the game in question is an open world game where we can fly with Iron Man as we want.
Open world Iron Man game never saw the light
Sundberg also said that they are working on a system where Iron Man can pat his enemies from behind walls with his special gloves. Given the action-oriented, chaotic nature of Just Cause games, it is possible to guess what kind of game Avalanche is working on Iron Man would be. The Iron Man gamesthat came out at that time, which were also released by SEGA, did not receive very good reviews.
Years after the cancellation of Iron Man’s game, Marvel and Disney’s interest in games has increased considerably. The VR Iron Man game released in 2020 is one of the examples. While Insomniac is working on Spiderman 2 and Wolverine, the Firaxis studio is developing Marvel’s Midnight Suns, one of the most anticipated games of the recent period. Amy Hennig, known for her storytelling in the Uncharted series, is developing an unnamed Marvel game with Skydance New Media studio, so that the bet is not like a Star Wars game.
