Sony has filed for a new patent as determined by Game Rant. This patent involves making the old PlayStation peripherals compatible with the PlayStation 5.
This patent application, filed by Sony Interactive Entertainment on June 30, 2022, is titled “Adapting the old to the new.” The patent includes a diagram of older PlayStation peripherals, including the PlayStation Move controller, EyeToy, PlayStation Mouse, PSP Go, Card reader and more.
The scheme emphasizes more controllers. The PlayStation Move controller included in these peripherals was first released in 2010 and was originally designed to rival Microsoft Kinect. This controller is compatible with PlayStation VR, but the PlayStation VR2 headset will have a new controller.
EyeToy, also included in the scheme, was released for the PlayStation 2 in October 2003 and simply functions as a Webcam with a motion sensor and microphone on it. PlayStation Mouse is used in mouse-compatible games.
With this patent application, the issue of making the old peripherals compatible with the new generation has emerged, while there is no official information by Sony yet. Therefore, it is not yet known for what purpose Sony has filed this patent application.
