Every few years, console generations move forward, and if gamers own the hardware of older consoles, it usually stays in their hands. However, Sony’s new patent shows that PlayStation 5 owners will be able to use the peripherals of old consoles, if any, in their new generation consoles.
Legacy peripherals compatibility for PlayStation 5 at stake
In the new generation that passed with the release of PlayStation 5, the peripherals of Sony’s old consoles were lost to history. However, according to this new patent, PlayStation 5 is going to a new compatibility for PS3 peripherals. The patent, identified by Gamerant , deals with “systems and methods for converting an old code into an updated new code.” Although the patent contains some technical terminology that technologists can understand, the image contained actually explains the purpose very well.
As you can see in the diagram above, a backward compatibility is being considered for some older hardware such as the DualShock 1, PSP Go, EyeToy. There may also be compatibility with PS1 and PS2 memory cards. The diagram shows how older PlayStation peripherals could be compatible with the next-generation console. Therefore, if card reader compatibility is achieved, players will be able to move and play PlayStation 1 games and saves to the next generation console.

Of course, just because something is patented doesn’t always mean that the company is actively working on it. Such patents are usually obtained from the beginning, or they are retained in case the company wants to continue to develop and work on the idea. In this way, if the work begins, at least the company will have the right to do so.
