Valve has announced that new Counter-Strike: Global Offensive players must now pay for ranked gaming.
Previously, new players of the free-to-play competitive first-person shooter had access to drops, ranks, skill groups, and a free path to Prime (paid) matchmaking.
Over time, Valve said, these benefits have become “an incentive for bad players to damage the experiences of both new and existing players.”
Now the company has a different offer for new players. Everyone can play in game mode, community servers and workshop maps. However, they will no longer receive XP and rank.
Valve has reported that these features are now only available to Prime Status players. The Prime Status upgrade costs 10.89 euros.
New players can continue to upgrade to Prime by purchasing the Premium Status upgrade from the Steam store. However, there is no longer a free route to Prime. (If you purchase the upgrade in the next two weeks, your current skill group and XP progress will continue.)
Prime players can also play unsuppretentious matches where skill groups will not be affected and there are no lobbying skill group restrictions.
