Riot Games is taking an important step to reduce toxic behavior in League of Legends and is closing the /all (General) conversation in paired rows with the 11.21 patch.
“Although general chat can be the scene of fun social interactions and sweet squabbles between teams, negative interactions are now more than positive interactions. We will examine the effects of this change through profanity/defamation and penalty numbers and interpret it directly with feedback and surveys from you,” Riot said.
Riot’s statement continues:
The only feature that is disabled will be public chat. Your opponents will still be able to hear and see your statements and champion mastery statements (unless muted), as well as ctrl+1/2/3/4 commands that you’ve repeatedly sorted. The chat on the end-of-game screen will continue to be between the two teams. Teammates will be able to keep planning with each other in team chat.
Speaking of this last article, we are aware that profanities and insults also appear in team chat, and we know that disabling public conversation will not completely prevent these verbal taunts. But team talk has an important place in teams working harmoniously in themselves, so the value it can provide is much greater; although it can be the scene of some negative experiences…
We are aware that it is a bad change for those of you who want to praise the costume of the opponent in your hallway or invite him to a dance party in the Baron pit. But we believe this is an action worthwheeling to prevent and reduce the negative situations that general chat causes in your games.
Time will tell how much this big change can reduce toxic behavior in the game or what the overall impact will be. Because toxic behavior for the team is one of the issues that players complain about the most, and Riot has indicated that they will not touch it for now.
