Sometimes I have a real hard time understanding the players. You wait all these years for a new Monkey Island game to come, and then knock it down just because the graphic style is what the original creator of the series announced. I’m also really curious about how they managed to reach such a definitive verdict based on three or four screenshots.
Ron Gilbert also weighed in on the issue in a blog post , saying, “Return to Monkey Island may not be the graphic style you want or expect, but it’s the graphic style I want.”
As a huge fan of the series, someone who has finished all his games over and over again, especially the first two games, I must say that I find the criticisms of “why not pixel graphics?” incredibly stupid. After all, The Curse of Monkey Island also adopted a different graphic style (and it was beautiful), as did Escape from Monkey Island.
“When I started this game, my biggest fear was that Disney wouldn’t let me make the game I wanted to make, but I found it great to work with them. The irony is that there are some hardcore Monkey Island fans who don’t want me to do the game I want. That’s what upsets me the most about all these comments,” Gilbert says.
The play’s artistic director is Illustrator and designer Rex Crowle, who has also worked on LittleBigPlanet, Tearaway and Knights and Bikes.
I think it’s going to be a pretty good job, but let’s see if there’s a game, let’s see, if the story is bad, if the graphic style is way below expectations, then we’ll do our reviews.
