Ron Gilbert, one of the most successful representatives of Point and Click and the adventure genre, has just become a new victim of social media harassment. The famous producer, who has been developing games since 1985, announced that he would not talk about the game again due to the aggressive comments he received after the Return to Monkey Island video . With the comments it receives both from its blog page and social media, we can say that the game has become the new target of the toxic mass.
Offensive comments caused Ron Gilbert to stop sharing
Ron Gilbert said in a statement; “I’m turning off comments. People are being rude and I have to delete personal attack comments. It’s a great game and everyone on the team is proud of it. Whether you play or not, don’t ruin it for others. I will no longer post about the game. The pleasure of sharing took me away.”
As you can imagine, the most important reason why players attack Return to Monkey Island is the artistic and graphic style of the game. Unfortunately, there is a bunch of skin fetishes waiting for every game to come out with Unreal Engine 5, to be action-packed like GTA, and for everything to be the way they want it to be. We’ve seen this toxic community attack many game makers before, even players who bring a character in the game to life. Ron Gilbert, on the other hand, apparently could not stand these comments and I think he made the right decision.
Monkey Island style games are productions that have a very special place. In fact, we were also aware that some of the changes that the game had gone through before could backfire. For this reason, we can say that many people other than those who will play the game can get caught in this flood of attacks. When the game was announced, Ron Gilbert made the following statements about the graphic style; “Return to Monkey Island may not be the art style you want or expect, but it’s the art style I want”.
