Russia has been under severe sanctions from all over the world since it invaded Ukraine. One of the sources of these sanctions is the software world.
Giant names including Microsoft, Sony, Apple and Adobe have withdrawn their products and services from Russia, while electronic arts, activision blizzard, ubisoft, take-two, cd projekt have also announced that their games will not be allowed to be sold within Russia. More and more game studios are adding to these sanctions and stopping the sale of their games.
The Russian government is preparing for a radical change to prevent this from affecting its people: in Russia, some pirated software is now considered legal and may be exempt from punishment.
Various measures are proposed to ensure that the Russian economy is not harmed by sanctions in the “Emergency Plan to Ensure the Continuity of the Development of the Russian Economy under The Pressure of Foreign Sanctions” prepared by the Russian Ministry of Economic Development.
If the law stating that unlicensed use of the games and applications mentioned will not impose any responsibility on the user, it will be legal to use the software of companies that support sanctions as pirates. Russia will not cover all software, but only the software of companies participating in sanctions. Although this includes video games, the main goal is said to be that Russian businesses can continue to use the software of companies such as Microsoft and Oracle without problems.
Russia has made several attempts to reduce piracy in recent years. But on the contrary, an arrangement to encourage piracy will probably be seen for the first time in the world.
