Sony will automatically notify the user when it’s time to renew, but Nintendo will turn off the renewal of those who choose auto-renewal as “YES” in the membership system panel. So it won’t be eaten without you knowing.
Sony and Nintendo membership system changes for our benefit
Automatic renewal of subscriptions is a serious problem for the user during this period when almost everything passes to the subscription system.
The UK Competition and Markets Committee (CMA) has set its sights on publishers including “3 Giant Companies”, namely Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo. In early January, Microsoft announced that it was turning off auto-renewals for inactive users for Xbox Live Gold and Game Pass. However, sony and nintendo have not yet announced that gamesindustry.biz has announced that the two giant companies will now follow new procedures for automatic renewal.
This is how Sony and Nintendo are changing the aboelic auto-renewal process.
- Sony will notify PlayStation Plus subscribers in advance and tell its users how to cancel their subscriptions if they wish. (Those who do not actively use it will automatically stop service)
- The Nintendo membership system will automatically “turn off” renewals for users who previously marked auto-renew as the default “on” at the time of purchase, and there will be no renewals.
CMA executive director Michael Grenfell said: “Today’s announcement completes our research into the online gaming industry. We are stating that companies in other sectors that offer automatic subscriber renewal services should review their practices to ensure that they comply with the consumer protection law.”
While the automated subscription renewal service is a contentious process that involves competition in almost every industry, it has long been an important issue in the gaming industry. Microsoft has been dealing with such lawsuits for Xbox Live for more than 10 years, but earlier this year it stepped in in January and took a concrete step towards auto-renewal.
