Sony announced last week that it had acquired Returnal’s developer, Housemarque; and acquired PlayStation Studios. In fact, considering how successful Returnal is, sony’s move was also very accurate. But what we don’t know is that Sony wasn’t alone in its request.
Speaking to Yle in Finland, CEO Ilari Kuittinen said the only offer they received for the acquisition did not come from Sony, but that there were other companies interested in them. Kuittinen did not name names, but it’s not hard to guess which of these firms are:
“Here are the names you know: big players in the industry from China, Sweden; and America. The fact that there are still people who want to buy us in competition still seems unrealistic to me.”
You were able to connect the dots right away, weren’t you? Tencent, which he calls From China, embracer group, which he calls Sweden, both of which are already famous for their aggressive acquisitions. America’s big player, of course, must be Microsoft, and no one would be surprised if they made an offer to Housemarque.
“It was clear from our interviews that Sony wanted to buy us because we were doing something that others didn’t,” Kuittinen said, seemingly pleased with the result.
