Square Enix shared never-before-seen footage of Tomb Raider: Ascension as part of the Tomb Raider’s 25th anniversary celebrations.
Three separate videos from Tomb Raider: Ascension, themed on darkness and horror, were shared. Their first early prototype gameplay shows brand tests, one with concept drawings and the other with early voiceover work.
Ascension later became a Tomb Raider reboot in 2013. In Ascension, we see Lara facing grotesque creatures.
They were inspired by the likes of Ico, Resident Evil and Shadow of the Colossus. At some point, we see Lara on horseback, as in Shadow of the Colossus. In the parts that are not in the footage, Lara is scheduled to be accompanied by a young girl, similar to Ico.
These plans were shelved when the Crystal Dynamics team began to doubt the game’s possible success.
