The Steam Deck has been compared to the Nintendo Switch since it was announced, but one of the biggest differences between them is the color. The Switch has a delicious variety of colours, especially thanks to its colorful JoyCons, while all the images shared on the Steam Deck indicated that it would be a console in black only. This information can be said to have been partially confirmed, it will be available only in black on steam deck release. But then there’s the possibility that he’ll show up in different colors.
Product designer Greg Coomer tells PC Gamerthat they had a long discussion about the color of the Steam Deck, deciding on a matte-black color in the first place, but they would also start considering different color options in recognition that the device had commercial success.
“We even had discussions about whether we could have a lot of colors. We are still having these discussions,” Coomer said, adding that the reason they decided on a single color was because of supply chain challenges rather than aesthetic concerns. “It’s more of a logistical situation. Having multiple SKUs (stock codes) in the market is much more complicated. There is no other reason why we choose one color,” Coomer said, giving the green light to different color options.
However, considering that the Steam Deck is a one-piece console, they will only be able to make color options with case color and perhaps different button colors, if the Switch had a removable JoyCon-like controller, then the options would be even greater.
