When the Street Fighter series broke its years-long silence and re-entered the market with the fourth game, the game’s designer, Seth Killian, was looking for a different character. By difference, what is meant is a new face like Blanka that can attract more attention than other characters like Dhalsim.
In an interview with GameSpot, Seth Killian says that he first thought of the character he wanted to design as a clown specializing in martial arts, and then the character of Hakan emerged when the producers wanted him to continue with a different concept.
Hakan is the only character from Turkey to participate in Street Fighter tournaments. It is one of the world’s leading oil producers and also a leader in our national sport, oil wrestling. His birthday is November 13. This date is a reference to the Liberation of Tekirdağ on November 13, 1922. Hair color is the Turquoise color that is depicted as unique to Turks in the world.
So far, everything may be okay, but her dark red skin, her circular curly hair arranged quite symmetrically on her head and of course her awesome accent can’t stop us Turkish players from asking “how so?”
When he speaks, Hakan appears as a man from the Soviet era, a family man, a man who has children (and even a lot of children). When we look at the external appearance, if we ignore his skin color, hairstyle and speech, we can say that he is a Turkish character from a little below and a little above for the sake of the kispet and hair color he wears underneath.
Street Fighter Hakan;s Story
Hakan, who is a full family father with his 7 daughters and his wife Melike (yes, his wife’s name was Melike), is also a national athlete and a big businessman as I said before. He participates in Street Fighter tournaments to showcase his skills and perhaps further his oil business.
Here he meets E. Honda, who later turns out to be an old friend.
This place will be a small spoiler for those who do not play the games, but in the Street Fighter 4 finale that ends with Hakan, we see him telling his wife that he will go to Japan and grow things. In fact, the Street Fighter 6 trailer has proven how big it gets. Because there is a huge Hakan Oil billboard in the opening scene of the trailer. Hakan Special extra virgin olive oils have now become a world brand.
Finale
In summary, compared to other characters, we do not say that Hakan has a very deep background story. It cannot be said that he is a character who can be called a complete Turk with everything, but it is still nice to see a Turkish character, or at least a character who is a little inspired by us, in a world-famous game like Street Fighter.
