Last month, Take2 made a decision and gradually began rolling out GTA modes. In addition to many modes, we have seen known GTA modes such as GTA Underground and HD mode, where AI and skins are upgraded, have also been taken off the air. Take2’s financial reports and statements to investors also received feedback on the issue.
Announcement on the removal of GTA modes
Take2 CEO Strauss Zelnick also provided a statement on GTA modes during the period when the company’s financial reports, such as GTA V sales, were released. Zelnick made a very clear and brief statement in this statement, noting that they are normally flexible but will definitely take down content that they think is damaging the company and the brand. Zelnick stated: “We’re quite stretched about it, but if the company’s economy is under threat or there’s content that reflects the brand badly, we’ll take it off the air,” he said.
Obviously we can agree that some content, namely GTA modes, is damaging the brand, this issue is debatable. But it’s really hard to understand how modes that influence graphics like HD mode or that gamers enjoy much more can threaten the company. This is also not related to GTA V or GTA IV, but mods to the series’ games such as San Andreas are also being taken off the air. It is not the preference of most players at the moment to play old games in their original form, which has become much more enjoyable with mods. However, some GTA V modes are still available for download. It is unclear whether there will be any interference in these modes.
