The Grammy Awards will also have a special category dedicated to video games, starting with its event in 2023. This category, called “Best Music for Video Games and Other Interactive Media,” will seek “excellence in an album consisting entirely of original tracks created specifically or in combination with a video game or other interactive media released during the qualification process.”
There will be a total of five new categories at the Grammy Awards in 2023. Outside of video games, the categories of Songwriter of the Year (Non-Classical), Best Alternative Music Performance, Best Americana Performance and Best Spoken Poetry Album are added.
The New York 8-Bit Big Band orchestra, which gained fame by covering songs from various video games at this year’s Grammy Awards, won the Grammy award with its Kirby cover. The band covered the song Meta Knight;s Revenge from the 1996 SNES game Kirby Superstar, which took home the Best Arrangement award.
In 2011, Civilization IV won the Grammy for “Best Instrumental Arrangement with Vocalist” and the following year Journey was nominated for Best Music in the Visual Media category.
