[We’re trying to introduce the indie games that are on our watch list in our waiting Indie column and are looking forward to them in five interesting articles.]
We wanted to go back to our waiting series of Indie with Torn Away. A few months ago, torn away was a game that was on my watch list. The developer team, who intend to tell a story about the plight of children in battle, will bring us together with the adventure of a girl named Asia.
> Perelesoq is a new studio based in Moscow. Torn Away will also be their first game. I like the way they describe themselves and their purpose, so let’s see what you think:
“Through video games, we came together to tell emotional stories to people. We are not trying to make super popular entertainment products that will be loved by everyone. Instead, we focused on attracting those who value storytelling, authentic visuals and impressive music.
> The production team includes experienced people. Sergei Ryzhov, who worked on the Oscar-nominated Revolting Rhymes, is the play’s artistic director. It is clear that the visual style of the game is given importance and Ryzhov appears to have performed well in this regard. The soundtrack is entrusted to Vasily Kashnikov, who has previously worked on such productions as Pathologic 2, The Void and Encased.
> Torn Away is a ‘side-scroller’, as the production team describes it. That is, from platform games in the style where we move from left to right (or right to left :)). But there’s a little privacy involved. We’ll also need to explore the surroundings and accurately assess the objects we find. In addition, one point that the producers emphasize in particular is that they are cinematic. From a first-person point of view, they aimed to draw us more into the story with cinematics.
> In Torn Away, which tells a story from the years of World War II, our protagonist is a little girl named Asia. The fact that his father was sent to the front, and his mother had to work all day long, leaves him alone. By the way, like many children at the time, he’s a captive worker. A gentle, fragile, vulnerable girl who is only 10 years old; he must face the great destruction of the war. It’s up to us to help him.
> The game is based on war diaries kept by children. It is possible to say through the eyes of a child that this is an important tool to understand what the great tragedy of war looks like. As we’ve seen in examples like This War of Mine, it’s going to be a game where we can experience how civilian lives are affected by this destruction.
