[ In our Indies column, we try to promote the indie games that are on our watch list and are looking forward to coming out in five interesting articles. ]
Dave Gilbert’s new game Old Skies was on my radar as soon as it was announced, and after playing the demo, I started to wait for the game with more enthusiasm. How about getting to know Old Skies together while they’re still around the corner?
> A Wadjet Eye Game: Wadjet Eye is one of the most successful representatives of today’s point ‘n click adventure games, not only with the games they publish (Gemini Rue, Primordia, Technobabylon, etc.) but also with the games they develop. This studio, headed by Dave Gilbert, last came up with a delicious game like Unavowed; The new game of a talent like Gilbert also excites the lovers of the genre.
We’re taking a break from our > pixel: Wadjet Eye will try its luck for the first time with a non-pixel art game. So this time we have a graphic style that resembles 90’s cartoons rather than 90’s games. These 2D graphics, which are completely hand-drawn, look very pleasing to the eye. This time, there will be no portraits of the big characters I like so much in the dialogues, but we need to be open to innovation.
How Would You Take Your > Time? Old Skies is a time travel game. Throughout this adventure, our protagonist, Fia, will travel back in time to seven different dates: we’ll travel to that unforgettable morning of September 11, Victorian era, and New York in 2024. In the future, time travel will be used for touristic purposes, and Fia is a guide that takes its customers on a trip through time. Of course, it will not take long for things to spiral.
> Dying Is in the Nature of It: In Old Sierra games it was possible to make mistakes and die, and in Old Skies, Fia can die, but that doesn’t mean “the game is over”. On the contrary, when Fia dies, we will see time rewind, but Fia will remember what he has learned so far and will be able to use this knowledge to overcome the puzzles he has to solve. If you play the Old Skies demo, you’ll see an example of this in the case puzzle.
> These Sounds Are Familiar to Me: If you’ve played Dave Gilbert games, some of the voiceovers in Old Skies, especially his voice, will be very familiar to you. Featuring Fia voiced by Sally Beaumont, the game will have the most comprehensive, most complete voiceovers we’ve ever seen in a Wadjet Eye game. Let me also say that the music of the game is entrusted to Thomas Regin, who is also a familiar name.
