Microsoft’s next-generation console, Xbox Series X and Series S, are selling more than the PlayStation 5 in Japan as of last week. Last week, Xbox sales surpassed twice as many as PlayStation 5 sales.
Xbox Series X sales in Japan surpass PS5 again
According to sales figures published by Famitsu, the Xbox Series X sold 3,272 units and the Series S sold 3,423 units. Meanwhile, the standard version of the PlayStation 5 sold 2,371 units and the digital version sold only 664 units. Xbox has almost doubled PlayStation 5 sales in Japan. However, we should not be fooled by these numbers and think that Xbox has become a dominant brand in the region. Because these numbers actually reveal the sales fluctuations in the region due to lack of stock.

For comparison, the previous week the PS5 sold 12,440 units, while the Xbox Series consoles sold 6,242 units. Xbox’s success this week isn’t having much of an impact in Japan looking at the overall picture. That’s because while 1.69 million PlayStation 5 consoles have been sold in the country in total, only 232,000 Xbox Series X/S consoles have been sold to date. However, it is a serious situation that there is often a shortage of PS5 stock in Sony’s homeland. With the latest sales, this week is the second week that Xbox in Japan overtakes Sony’s console. In a one-week period last month, the Series X and S consoles sold 6,120 units, while the PS5 sold a total of 2,963 units. Previously, the last time Xbox sold more than the PlayStation was in 2014. You know, the Xbox One was released that year.
Stock shortages are also helping Microsoft’s console to move forward despite poor sales in Japan. Of course, while these two companies are selling, Nintendo Switch continues to be the giant of its own country. The Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED versions sold more than 50,000 copies this week, which is 5 times more than the Xbox and PS combined. At the same time, all of the best-selling games in the country were Switch games. The total sales figure of Nintendo Switch is over 25 million in Japan.
