[ In our weekly Unforgettable Soundtracks column, we remember together the soundtracks that do not leave our memories, leaving deep traces and sweet memories in all of us. ]
Swampling is a lonely character. When we walk into his house in the swamp, he’s overjoyed because finally someone remembers him!
Swampling’s birthday was two weeks ago. No one came to celebrate his birthday because he didn’t have a single friend, but he still didn’t give up hope, thinking, “Sooner or later, we’ll have company and we’ll celebrate.” That’s why he’s doing everything he can to make us happy.
I’m so pleased!
Maybe we don’t have cake, but he’s cooked swamp stew made from swamp mud, the recipe of which has been passed down from generation to generation, and he insists that we eat it. Poor Swampling’s already alone, he doesn’t have any friends, he’ll be even sadder if we don’t taste his st not. When he couldn’t stand the smell of food and turned down his offer, he said, “I thought it was my first birthday friend ever. No one comes to see me anymore.”
We’re eating plates of swamp stew with our faces turned green, because it’s the only way out of that house without upsetting Swampling. When he finishes his stint, he thinks we love him so much, he goes out to collect new ingredients, so we leave this denunciation behind us and move on.
Simon the Sorcerer is intrinsically a funny game, just like the Monkey Island series, but I’ve always been saddened by swampling’s story. It has nothing to do with me playing the game at a younger age, and even though I played it many times afterwards, I always had the same feelings in the same place, always with the same music. Even now, when I think of Simon the Sorcerer, that’s exactly why swampling music came to mind before theme music.
If you’ve played the game, you’ll go back as soon as you press the Play button on the video below, unless you’ve already found yourself there the moment you read these lines, 🙂
