Pokmon, one of the most valuable brands in the gaming world, is preparing to move to a new era at the end of this year. Together with Scarlet & Violet, we will say hello to the ninth generation. Of course, not only the new generation Pokemons, but also plenty of innovations, especially the gameplay mechanics, are waiting for us. When it comes to Pokemon games, we have learned over the years how limited the innovations are. However, Pokemon Legends: Arceus, which was released in the first period of this year, brought quite big changes.
Nintendo, which devoted August 3 to Pokemon, made a detailed introduction of Scarlet and Violet. Based on the nearly three-minute introductory video, we learned a lot of detail and innovation. In the ninth generation, both new Pokemon and new versions of old faces will be waiting for us. Let’s take a look at the innovations of Pokemon Scarlet & Violet;
Welcome Hot Climate Zone – Time to Say Hello to Paldea
Each Pokemon generation starts with a new region. Kanto, the first point of origin of this journey, was also the most extreme example in this regard. Because the name of the place where Kanto is based is really inspired by the Kanto region of Japan, and the Sevii Islands are inspired by the islands of Izu and Bonin. Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh (Hisui) again took us to various parts of Japan. Unova and I were out of Japan for the first time with the New York breezes. Later, the Kalos region was inspired by the northern part of France, and Alola warmed us in the warm waters of Hawaii. The Galar, where the eighth generation passed, was based on Great Britain and included good references in football.
Our European adventure will continue with Paldea, the region of the ninth generation. The regions inspired by Paldea are exactly Portugal and Spain, that is, the Iberian Peninsula. Producing Pokemon that carry cultural factors specific to the region where each generation passes is something that GameFreak loves very much. Since it’s about Spain, I’m expecting to see a pretty strong bull Pokemon. Or a steel-type Tauros variant/evolution wouldn’t be bad either. This warm climate zone will have plenty of variety to offer us. Not only temperate quarters, but also snowy lands are included in Paldea, as we see in the trailer. So we’re going to see a pretty big map.
Does the student pass the akbili? – The Problem of Transportation in Paldea
The cycling mechanics in Pokemon games have become a situation where there are plenty of jokes on the internet. Legends: Arceus, the mechanics of going on water and land by updating his Roton bike, especially starting with Sword & Shield, were technically primitive but advanced in gameplay, offering plenty of different transportation options with the help of various Pokemon. For example, we hid in a Sneasel’s basket to climb rocks, and jumped up hills with Braviary to fly, or rather glide. I would like to remind you that these mechanics save us from a great disease as well as the beauties they bring to the open world of the game. No more HMs in our lives and empty attacks that fill slots unnecessarily!
It seems that Paldea will follow a mix of Sword & Shield and Arceus for open-world strolls. As far as it is understood from the trailer, depending on the game we choose, one of the two different Pokemon will be a bicycle for us, a water ski when it is necessary and an airplane when it is necessary! This mechanic, which we are used to from Roton, has been changed a little more, looking like a pretty sweet design for exploration. One of our options is to take a tea break with our Pokemon turned into a motorcycle at the on-road stops that will also serve as a Poke Center. Cha com Leite, the famous milk tea of Portuguese culture, will probably be one of the beautiful references in the game.
Treasure Pokemon on Duty – Treasure Hunt Begins
Until he came to Legends: Arceus in Pokemon games, it was about saving the world and often the universe as well as being a Pokemon champion. Even as Arceus looks at this issue from another side, it will have a special place in my heart. Scarlet & Violet, on the other hand, surprised me by putting a treasure hunt rather than a championship in its introduction. There are at least two different schools in the game (which will probably serve as the team system of the old games) and a treasure trove to be found. Of course, while chasing this treasure, being the Pokemon Champion, which is our main duty again, will be a part of our lives. How do we know this? We had the chance to meet the first gym leader of the game.
Paldea’s first grandmaster will be Gurusa. He is the leader of Galseado Gym and has mastered the ice Pokemon. However, the point where the game distinguishes itself from all the other elements is not the gyms. It will be our turn to do these things. Again, we have a total of eight leaders waiting to cry out with super-effective attacks. But this time we don’t have to do it in a specific order! First you will have the chance to go to whichever salon you want to beat. On the other hand, it’s up to you to take a break from this championship business and discover Paldea’s culture, geography and, of course, Pokemon. The aforementioned treasure hunt will probably also intersect with the championship at some point. According to the announced innovations, there will be three different story trees in the game. I hope that these three different story trees will intersect at some point towards the end of the game and give us a good endgame experience.
Form Temporary Classy is Permanent – Is the Motorcycle Legend That Happens?!
Normally, we wouldn’t see legendary Pokemon in Pokemon games until we were close to the end of the game. This time, however, they will be given to us as comrades and tools right at the beginning of the game. Of these, Koraidon, which is adorned with red color, and Miraidon, which is decorated with purple colors for the Scarlet version, will accompany us for the Violet version. I think one type of both Pokemon will be dragons. For Koraidon, the fire or fight side type for Miraidon may be ghost, steel or electric side type. It is not yet clear from which point of the game we can add these Pokemon to our team and fight. Most likely, depending on the chosen game, a legendary Pokemon task tree will also be waiting for us in the new game.
With the first details coming out of the game, quite interesting theories about the Johto region and surprise egg claims began to come to the fore. If you remember, in the supplementary packages of Sword & Shield, there were regional variants exclusive to Kanto’s three legendary birds, Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres. For Paldea, such a trilogy of variants could come for Johto’s legendary trio Suicune, Raikou and Entei. Some fans claimed to have seen a crystal resembling Suicune’s head where the game’s new mechanics were shown. So what is this crystallization? Finally, let’s take a look at the game’s new combat mechanics.
Don’t Go to Therapy Chase Bright Pokemon – Tera Combat Mechanics
In an ordinary Pokemon fight, two braves appear and take turns hitting each other. Throughout the year, this system has more or less never changed. But with X&Y, mega-evolution entered our lives, and the strategies in the war became a little different. Sword & Shield’s Dynamax system was able to make us watch scenes where giant cups were woven with each other. Scarlet & Violet also comes with a combat system unique to the Paldea region. This phenomenon, called the Terastal Phenomenon, has a great parallel with Dynamax. As a result of an anomaly in the region, the Pokemon who gained this power would also have Tera types. The information so far says that almost all of the Tera types will be in parallel with the original type of Pokemon. So when your Pikachu switches to the Tera form, the Tera type will also be electric.
With an item called Tera Orb, we will be able to Terastallize Pokemon. These Tera Orbs will also have a charge and we will be able to charge them from Pokemon Centers or with the help of crystals that we find in the open world. Just like the Max Raids of the Dynamax system, this time we will have the chance to go up to four of our friends to Tera Raids and fight powerful Pokemon. If you purchase the early access version of the game, you’ll receive a special Pikachu as a gift. Unlike the ordinary Pikachu, this Pikachu will be flying balloons, just like his variation on the old Pokemon cards, and will join your team by learning the Fly attack. In addition, this special Pikachu;s Tera type will also be in the flying pokemon type.
When I was reviewing Pokemon Legends: Arceus, I said that I hope that the foundations laid here will spread to the new game. All the details we’ve seen from Scarlet & Violet so far indicate that Arceus’ efforts are not in vain. It will probably be a much fuller open world than Hisui, because this was the part of the game that received the most complaints. Already riding on the backs of new legends and visiting mountains, hills, streams, discovering new Pokemon has managed to attract me even now. If the option to free move the character in the combat system comes again, we can at least take part in the fights in an interactive way. The ninth generation, which will debut on November 18, meets the expectations so far, and I hope we can talk so well after the game is released.
