In comic book universes, when the gods come into it, it changes shape for me. Because it’s not very tasty when what you call God comes up against enemies in tights. There must be enemies worthy of the gods. If you say ha, are there too many enemies like that? I’m afraid not. In fact, most comic book gods get a lot of beatings from characters in tights as if they didn’t get their share of mythological backgrounds. There’s a very beautiful godkopat (that phrase fits gorr) that I can connect with among the enemies of all these gods in the past. Gorr, God Butcher, the Butcher of God.
No one just says “Butcher of God” to a man out of the blue. If asgard or Olympos were just someone who sells meat to the gods, maybe it could be said, but Gorr doesn’t sell meat, he cuts meat, and it’s not illegal meat, it’s first-rate god meat. I had a lot of milliseconds of joy after it was confirmed that we were going to see Gorr in Thor: Love and Thunder because his potential was really good. But when he remembered Disney’s 13+ policies and the MCU’s love of comedy, that joy was replaced by a strange anticipation. You’ll understand why this expectation is strange when you tell gorr a little bit. Let’s see what the life story of the big-hearted butcher born out of the middle of nowhere is like.
I wished god a wish.
Born on an unnamed planet to an ordinary child of an unnamed family, Gorr’s life conditions change the whole story. The people around Gorr (actually aliens) who grew up seeing people die of starvation every day on a starving planet are quite conservative. In this environment, which has an infinite trust in the gods, the prayers that are said every day, as you can imagine, find no recompense. Gorr lost his parents to starvation at a very early age; his life is becoming more and more difficult. But Gorr, who has a very solid character and persistence, manages to fight.
She marries Arra and has children in adulthood. Since most of these children have not survived, Gorr also has a large wound inside him. Despite all these difficult circumstances, Gorr managed to establish order for himself and continued his struggle without the help of the gods. But the earthquake disaster a few years after the marriage killed his pregnant wife, Arra; and almost all of his children. Only Agar survives. However, the hunger that intensifies after the earthquake causes the death of Agar, the branch on which Gorr clung to life. That’s when Gorr throws the switches and the legend of the Black Butcher begins to emerge.
Black Butcher Legend
After Agar’s death, Gorr faces an unspeakable pain and is now completely convinced that the gods do not exist. Gorr, who is excluded from society because of these “atheist” ideas, is condemned to exile. The battle of the two gods changes all events as you beg to die in the desert. The world of Gorr, who witnessed the battle of Knull, a dark ancient god with a purple skin tone in gold armor, suddenly turns around… Gorr, who sees the existence of the gods with his eyes, is in a frenzy. On top of all this, when he asks gorr, the god in gold armor, for help, the belt completely breaks. Knull’s sword becomes a gigantic living darkness, ingrating with Gorr, and that’s exactly how the legend of the Black Butcher is born. Gorr, who killed the all-black the Necrosword on the spot with his armoured gold, vows to kill all the gods who never return to their prayers.
Gorr, who wanders through the cosmos and begins to cut off all the gods that confront him, never runs out of revenge. After fully committing himself to this goal, he becomes a character spoken with fear by the gods. So much so that many of the gods he kills are really afraid of Gorr before he takes his last breaths. Gorr’s chosen gods were usually the gods of fear, war, massacre, revenge, epidemics, jealousy and death. However, some flowers, poems, gods of good things also had their share of this black butcher. This god-hunting process begins in ancient times and gradually comes back to the middle ages. As time goes on, new gods begin to hear the legend of Gorr the God Butcher.
Lightning Strike
Gorr, who also made his way to Earth in the 800s, is on Thor’s radar after killing a god in the Americas. A little later, during the Vikings’ fall in Russia, Thor sees some Slavic gods die. Of course, these gods, facing the wrath of Gorr, alarm Thor. And then Gorr starts attacking Thor with all his might. In fact, a lightning strike almost kills Thor, saving Thor. Gorr then hides in a cave to gather his strength and encounters Thor again. Gorr, who tortured Thor severely for 17 days to learn about Asgard, is defeated at some point with the help of Vikings who worship Thor. Thor, who managed to rip off Gorr’s right arm, declares himself victorious and leaves, but as you can imagine, Gorr’s anger has not cooled yet, but it has been fueled.
Troubled by the Vikings’ worship of Thor, Gorr spends the next thousand years killing more gods and building himself an army of dark creatures. Once again, Gorr and his army, who are old enough, are attracting Thor’s attention. Thor’s real understanding of the situation is a planet where there is no God or no god left. Thor hears the voice of someone praying for their dead god here, and when he looks around, he understands very easily that Gorr is passing through here. Thor, who begins his quest for the Butcher of God, ends up in the cave where they first fought. Meanwhile, Gorr fights Chronux, captures Pool of Forevers and begins to travel through time and space.
God Particles
The defeat of Chronox and the laying of time-space at the feet of Gorr give Gorr a completely different idea. Gorr begins preparations for an explosion around Pool of Forevers that will kill all the gods, and for this idea, he enslaves the gods and employs them as miners. You know how I said that an ordinary enemy of God is boring, and vice versa, that he has the power and anger to enslave the gods, making him perhaps the greatest enemy in all comic books to resist. Gorr, who has become more integrated with the All-Black over time, produces copies of his son and wife from the All-Black symbiote. Gorr, who never forgets thor having his right arm ripped off, plans to send his minions, the Black Berserkers, back in time and kill the young Thor.
Marvel, which loves to make time and space a mess, immediately begins to fight against Gorr by bringing together various Thors. Even the combination of young Thor, Avenger Thor and King Thor is not enough to stop Gorr. But Gorr, who has been closest to betrayal, is devastated by his wife Agar’s new form thor calling him “God.” Gorr, who also killed his wife in anger, is fighting a magnificent battle against three Thors. Fearing becoming one of the gods he most hated in life, Agar, who calls Gorr the “God of Hypocrisy”, also cries for Gorr to die. Then thor from the past strikes the final blow, causing Gorr to officially die, and does the legend of the Black Butcher end with the betrayal he received from his nearest one?!
Loki’s Stories with a Happy Ending
With so much time and space and other universes involved, things are starting to change in Earth-616, the true Marvel universe. Gorr’s thoughts and hatred of the gods deeply affect Thor; With his consciousness trapped in the All-Blacks, Gorr at least continued to exist peacefully. But many years later, the All-Black, resurrected by King Loki, is again dragging the universe into a stalemate of rage and chaos. When Loki’s ingenious plan backfires, Gorr’s regaining power suddenly results in Thor and Loki facing the best lesson they can learn in their lives. Gorr mocks the two brothers and is launched into space under the power of All-Father Thor.
It’s not immediately clear that this launch wasn’t such a good idea either. Frustrated, Gorr is locked in a war with All-Father Thor that is destroying solar systems. Meanwhile, Thor;a Midgard and Gorr, who says he will destroy life throughout the cosmos, continues to fight with two brothers stronger than ever before. In the final battle, one of the events in which Loki’s jaw rarely works, Gorr manages to poison the entire universe with the All-Blacks. In fact, Loki, who tells old stories to Gorr, who is close to pulling Thor into a black hole, changes the course of the battle, and All-Father Thor has the time to make the final shot. Thor, who destroyed the All-Black symbiote with the help of Mjolnir, is also reinstating Gorr from thousands of years ago. Taken by the Indigarr’s Sky Gods, Gorr was waiting to die peacefully as we last knew.
Stop defying the gods, a true Butcher of God who makes them his slaves, tortures too many gods for pleasure, will soon be included in the MCU. But there’s no way we’re going to see a lot of the stories I’m talking about here on the big screen. At least under the Disney roof and taika waititi’s humorous side, it certainly won’t work in these tones. Nevertheless, the character gorr, which we first saw in 2012, was the best equipped character in the comics to fight a god in the last 10 years. Now we’re going to see a completely different Gorr, played by Christian Bale in Thor: Love and Thunder. On top of that, Mighty Thor will be involved in this story, and again, plenty of chaos awaits us. Gorr, who I can empathize with a lot in terms of origin story, I hope he manages to send this justified message within the MCU.
